An ensuite is the one bathroom in your home that’s entirely yours. It’s where you start and end your day, and it should work exactly the way you need it to. At Just In Place, we design and build ensuite bathrooms across Sydney; from compact one-bedroom apartment ensuites to full master suite renovations with freestanding baths and custom cabinetry.

Getting the Layout Right

The layout is the hardest part of any ensuite renovation, and it’s where most of the budget decisions get made. A well-planned layout makes a small bathroom feel generous. A poorly planned one makes a large bathroom feel cramped.

In most Sydney apartments and older homes, ensuites are tight, typically between 3 and 6 square metres. That space needs to fit a shower, a vanity and a toilet, and still feel comfortable to use. We work through every layout option before anything gets built: where the plumbing sits, which way the door swings, whether a frameless shower screen opens the room up or closes it down.

For larger ensuites, the decisions are different. A double vanity is almost always worth it for a shared master bathroom. A freestanding bath makes sense if there’s genuine floor space, but it needs room to breathe, not just room to fit.

What to Include in Your Ensuite

Vanity: This is the centrepiece of most ensuites. We build custom timber vanities in-house, wall-hung or floor-standing, in hardwood or painted finishes, sized to fit your specific space. Off-the-shelf vanities rarely fit awkward alcoves or non-standard wall widths. A custom-built vanity solves that.

Shower: In most Sydney ensuites, the shower is the feature. We can design a full tiled shower recess, a frameless glass enclosure, or a wet room layout depending on your space and budget. Shower niches and built-in ledges are worth planning in from the start, retrofitting them later is expensive.

Storage: The most common complaint we hear after a renovation is “we didn’t build in enough storage.” Mirror cabinets, shaving cabinets, niches and drawer vanities all help. Think through what you actually store in a bathroom before the walls go up.

Toilet: In a shared ensuite, the toilet position matters. A wall-hung toilet saves floor space and makes cleaning easier. If the slab or subfloor allows it, it’s worth considering.
