Choosing a vanity to suit your space and style

While all vanities are similar in that they have a basin and usually some storage, there are almost endless options when it comes down to actually choosing your piece.  From the dimension and materials, right down to the size and style of frame , the details you choose can will help you achieve the look and feel you want for your bathroom.

The beauty of timber for a bathroom vanity

Solid timber vanities have an authenticity and about them that you just can’t achieve with wood-look laminate. They’re not only durable and timeless, but each vanity we make has its own unique grain and texture – so no two are every the same!

When designing your timber vanity with Just in Place, one of the key decisions you’ll make is which timber you want to use. Some clients know straight away which one they like, whereas for others, it’s a much tougher decision as they like them all!

However, there are aspects to each timber species that can help narrow down your decision.

For example, if your style is earthy and organic, you might look at Wormy Chestnut as your choice of timber. Full of lovely knots and natural features, Wormy Chestnut will add texture and depth to your bathroom. It’s a great option if your overall bathroom design is quite paired back, as it can add plenty of detail and interest to your design.

If your style is more traditional, you might decide to go with American Oak or Tasmanian Oak. Both beautiful and quite light in tone, they have fewer “features” and can give a more uniform look. This option can work really well when you need a finish that is unfussy and or for a style of vanity that has lots of other details.

What size to choose?

Storage is always a hot topic in bathroom design. No one loves clutter, especially in a space meant for relaxation. So making sure your vanity will provide you with enough storage for everything you use is critical. It might seem like an obvious point to make but actually a lot of people do underestimate how much storage they actually have in their vanity. 

A couple of useful things to remember:

• If you are having an undermount basin, you will lose something storage capacity in the top section of your vanity. 
• If you’re going for ‘drawers only’ for your vanity, check the height of your shampoo bottles to make sure you can stand them up in the drawers

And finally, bigger is not not always better! You don’t always have to choose the biggest vanity that you can possibly fit into the space. A well designed vanity with the right type storage can be just as effective and can save you money.

• Drawers or cabinets?
• A single basin or double?
• Above counter basin, undermount or semi-inset?
• Stone or porcelain benchtop or timber?
• Handles or finger pulls?
• What style of frame? Slim, chunky or bevelled?
