A Modern Heritage Kitchen in Inner Sydney

How bold colour and timeless details came together in this beautifully tailored renovation by Just In Place
This galley kitchen renovation in Alexandria, inner Sydney, is a showcase of balance: bold yet classic, functional yet full of charm. Every design choice works towards a design that feels grounded in history, but tailored for contemporary living.

A Galley Kitchen with Character
The layout of this kitchen follows a traditional galley style – narrow, efficient, and perfect for maximising flow in smaller spaces. But it’s the use of colour that truly sets it apart. One side of the joinery features a deep, elegant green (McCubbin Green by Berger Paint) that instantly draws the eye and adds a sense of drama and depth to the space. It’s a deliberate design decision that gives this kitchen personality and a modern edge.
To complement the cabinetry, we introduced a suite of heritage-inspired features:
- Classic white subway tiles that bring texture and timelessness
- A generous butler’s sink, offering both function and a nod to tradition
- A freestanding oven, anchoring the space with an distinguished, heritage feel
- And a striking brass pot filler, adding elegance and everyday convenience above the cooktop

Thoughtful design, open feel
Rather than installing overhead cabinets, we opted to keep the walls open and clear. This allows natural light to flood the room and significantly increases the sense of space – something especially important in a compact footprint like this.
Instead, custom open shelving offers a practical and beautiful way to store or display the families favourite items, and personal treasures, adding to the kitchen’s personality without compromising function.
Other standout features include:
- Brass tapware and hardware for warmth and cohesion
- Gentle grey quartz benchtops with soft veining for durability and visual interest
- A coffee and wine nook with integrated wine fridge — because lifestyle matters in great design

Designed for real life
This kitchen isn’t just about looks. It’s built to be lived in — to host, to enjoy, to make coffee in the morning and cook family dinners at night. Every detail was chosen to support not just style, but everyday living.
At Just In Place, we specialise in creating spaces that reflect the lives, tastes, and routines of the people who use them. This project is a perfect example of that philosophy in action.
